Surface traits arise from the interplay of underlying source traits and represent key components of personality. According to Cattell, surface traits refer to the observable aspects of a person’s behavior that are evident in their actions. He identified 35 such trait groupings by examining the evaluations made by close acquaintances of individuals. These traits are termed “surface traits” because they visibly reflect outward expressions of personality. Surface traits are generally influenced by underlying, more fundamental traits, known as source traits, which are the deeper, more stable qualities that drive a person’s behavior.
