Stressors are the triggers or events that cause stress. These can come from a person’s environment, thoughts, or social life. They might include external factors like noise or pollution (environmental stressors), internal feelings like guilt or pressure (psychological stressors), or social issues like breakups or loneliness (social stressors). Stressors lead to various emotional, physical, and mental reactions. Simply put, they are situations or events that result in stress.
Kaplan and Sadock mention examples such as breakups, changing or leaving school, divorce, death of a parent, family conflicts, abuse, illness in the family, and being placed in foster care all of which can cause stress at different levels.
