Cryolite (Na3AlF6) has two roles in the metallurgy of aluminum:
- To decrease the melting point of the mixture from 2323 K to 1140 K.
- To increase the electrical conductivity of Al2O3.

Cryolite increases the electrical conductivity of alumina, which is basically a very weak electrical conductor, and decreases the mixture’s fusion temperature.
