Solution

  • The melting point of pure alumina (Al2O3) is about 2050°C.
  • To reduce this very high melting point, alumina is dissolved in molten cryolite (Na3AlF6), which lowers the melting point to about 900°C - 1000°C, making electrolysis feasible.
