What is the iodoform test?

Solution

The iodoform test is a qualitative test for a methyl-ketone group (R–CO–CH3) or compounds that can be oxidised to a methyl-ketone (e.g. ethanol, isopropyl alcohol). A positive test gives a yellow crystalline precipitate of iodoform (CHI3).
