The Internet, sometimes known as the Net, is a worldwide system of computer networks – a network of networks in which users at any one computer can access information from any other computer (and sometimes converse directly with users of other computers) if they have permission. The ARPANET was created in 1969 by the United States government's Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA).
