Question

What is the function of radial magnets in a d.c. motor?

Short Answer

Solution

The radial magnets (concave cylindrical magnets) provide a strong uniform radial magnetic field in which the coil rotates. This magnetic field interacts with the magnetic field produced by the current-carrying coil to produce a deflecting couple (torque), which rotates the coil and converts electrical energy into mechanical energy.
