Solution
The earth’s core is mainly composed of two heavy metals: iron (Fe) and nickel (Ni), collectively known as NIFE (Ni + Fe). It is the densest layer with a density of about 13 g/cm3. The core has two parts: the outer core, which is molten due to very high temperatures, and the inner core, which is solid because of immense pressure. The core’s temperature averages around 5000°C, similar to the sun’s surface temperature. This iron-nickel composition generates earth’s magnetic field. The core’s diameter is approximately 3500 km.
