Solution 1

Ethyl amine, on reaction with nitrous acid, forms ethyl diazonium salts as a very unstable intermediate, which decomposes immediately by reaction with solvent water to give ethanol.

\[\ce{\underset{Ethyl amine}{C2H5 - NH2} + HNO2 ->[273-278 K][(NaNO2 + HCl)] \underset{Ethyl diazonium chloride}{[C2H5 - \overset{\oplus}{N2}Cl^\ominus]} ->[H2O] \underset{Ethanol}{C2H5 - OH} + N2 \uparrow + HCl}\]

Solution 2

\[\ce{C2H5 - NH2 + HNO2 -> C2H5 - OH + N2 \uparrow + H2O}\]
