Since people differ from one another in terms of their lifestyle, dislikes, preferences, skin color, ability, etc., groups are formed based on certain commonalities among their members. This might be interpreted as the society's vertical divide. Additionally, there is a horizontal separation that highlights how two groups are superior and inferior to one another. The criterion of having money, wealth, education, and social privileges can be used to stratify society into different categories.
