The ‘Phoney War’ refers to the period between September 1939 and April 1940, following the German invasion of Poland and the start of World War II, during which no major military action took place on the Western Front. Although Britain and France had declared war on Germany after the invasion of Poland, they did not launch any significant attacks against Germany. Both sides remained largely inactive, building up their forces and preparing for war.
