Solution

Dialysis is the process of separating impurity particles (crystalloids) from an impure sol using a suitable membrane that allows only smaller particles to pass through. It is carried out using a dialyser, which is a bag made of parchment or cellophane filled with the impure sol. The bag is suspended in a tank with circulating pure water, causing impurities to diffuse out, leaving the pure sol inside. The process can be expedited by applying an electric field, known as electrodialysis.
