Solution
The Assam Accord, signed in 1985, was an important agreement between the Indian Government and the leaders of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and the All Assam Gana Sangram Parishad (AAGSP). It was the result of the Assam Agitation (1979-1985), which aimed to address the issue of illegal immigration and protect the rights of the Assamese people. The Accord stipulated that all illegal immigrants who had entered Assam after 1 January 1966 would be identified and disenfranchised, with plans for their deportation. It also aimed at protecting the cultural identity and political rights of the indigenous Assamese population, ensuring that they were not politically or economically marginalized. The agreement marked the end of the violent agitation, offering a peaceful resolution to the tensions caused by the issue of illegal immigration.
