Solution
The first three caliphs were all members of the Quraysh tribe, which was Prophet Muhammad’s own tribe. However, followers of the fourth caliph, Ali (a relative of the Prophet), believed that leadership should be restricted to the Prophet’s immediate family. Ali faced significant opposition, most notably from Muawiyah, the governor of Syria. In 661 AD, Muawiyah declared himself Caliph and established the Umayyad dynasty, moving the capital to Damascus. Under his rule, the caliphate transitioned into a hereditary system. The dynasty continued until 750 AD, during which time it successfully expanded Islamic influence into Spain, North Africa, and south-west France.
