Solution
An earthquake is caused by the release of stress built up in the earth’s crustal rocks. This stress results from the constant movement of tectonic plates such as converging, diverging, or sliding past each other. When the built-up stress overcomes the opposing forces, rocks suddenly move, releasing energy as tremors or seismic waves from a point called the seismic focus.
