The two main methods of election are direct and indirect elections.

  1. Direct Election: In a direct election, voters directly elect their representatives. The people vote for the candidate of their choice, and the candidate who secures the majority of votes is declared elected. For Example, the Lok Sabha elections in India. It ensures direct participation of the people in the democratic process.
  2. Indirect Election: In an indirect election, the voters elect an intermediary body, which then elects the representative or official. For Example, the election of the President of India. It is used for electing individuals to high constitutional offices where direct elections are not considered suitable.
