Extinction may occur naturally, during episodes of mass extinction, or as a result of human activity. Major present-day human-caused drivers include habitat loss and fragmentation, pollution and disturbances, overexploitation, invasion by alien species, and co-extinction. These activities have made the current extinction rate far higher than the pre-human rate.
