Solution 2

The polymers derived from unsaturated hydrocarbons (olefins) are termed as polyolefins. The important polymers of this class are given below.

Polyethylene (Polythene): It is one of the most widely used polymers and is utilized in the production of numerous home items. It is prepared by the addition polymerisation of ethylene. Polymerisation at high pressure and Polymerisation at low pressure are the methods used for the manufacture of polythene.

Polypropylene (PP): It is a propylene polymer. It is made by applying the Ziegler-Natta catalyst to propylene in an inert solvent.

Polypropylene exhibits high resistance to both alkalis and acids. Compared to polythene, it is stronger and tougher. Its tensile strength is high.

It is used as a lining in bags, to make heat-shrinkable wrapping for documents, and as a packaging material for food, textiles, and other items. Ropes can also be made with it. For its weight, polypropylene rope is incredibly durable.

Polystyrene (Styron): It is a polymer of styrene (C6H5 - CH = CH2). It is made by polymerizing styrene with free radical addition when a catalyst is present.

It is a translucent, a-linear polymer. It can withstand halogen acids and alkalis. The appropriate acids have the ability to nitrate and sulphonate it. It dissolves in a variety of liquids. Hot drink cups, bottle caps, toiletries, refrigerator components, radio cabinets, television coils, wall tiles, toys, brush handles, combs, and more are all made of polystyrene.
