Question
Use the following figure, showing the layout of a farm house:

- What is the area of land used to grow hay?
- It costs ₹ 91 per m2 to fertilise the vegetable garden. What is the total cost?
- A fence is to be enclosed around the house. The dimensions of the house are 18.7 m × 12.6 m. At least how many metres of fencing are needed?
- Each banana tree required 1.25 m2 of ground space. How many banana trees can there be in the orchard?

Solution
- Area of land used to grow hay = 17.8m × 10.6 m = 188.68 m2 ...[∵ Area of rectangle = Length × Breadth]
- ∴ Area of vegetable garden = 49 m × 15.2 m = 744.80 m2
∵ Cost to fertilise 1 m2 vegetable garden = ₹ 91
∴ Cost to fertilise 744.80 m2 vegetable garden = ₹ 91 × 744.80 = ₹ 67776.80 - Since, fence is to be enclosed around the house of dimensions 18.7 m × 12.6 m.
∵ Perimeter of the house = 2 × (l + b)
∴ Total length of fence = 2 × (18.7 + 12.6) m = 2 × 31.3 m = 62.6 m - Area covered by banana orchard = 20 m × 15.7 m = 314 m2
Since, 1.25 m2 area is required by 1 banana tree.
∴ 314 m2 area is required by number of banana trees = `314/1.25` = 251.25 ≈ 251 trees
