Two numbers are respectively 20 percent and 50 percent more than a third number. What percent is the second of the first?

Solution

Let the third number = x

∴ First number = `x + (20)/(100) x`

= `(100x + 20x)/(100)`

= `(120x)/(100)`

Second number = `x + (50)/(100) x`

= `(100x + 50x)/(100)`

= `(150x)/(100)`

Required % = `((150x)/(100))/((120x)/(100)`

= `(150x)/(100) xx (100)/(120x) xx 100`

= `(150 xx 100)/(120)`

= `(1500)/(12)`

= 125%
