Two balls of masses in ratio 1 : 2 are dropped from the same height find

a) the ratio between their velocities when they strike the ground and

b) the ration if the forces acting on them during motion.

Solution

a) Initial velocity, u = 0 m/s

Final velocity = v

`M_1 : M_2 = 1 : 2`

From equation `v^2 - u^2 = 2gh`

So `v = sqrt(2gh)`

`v_1/v_2 = sqrt(2gh)/sqrt(2gh) = 1/1 = 1 : 1`

b) Force = mg

`F_1/F_2 = (m_1g)/(m_2g) = 1/2 = 1 : 2`
