Question

There is a shift of materials in mass movements as well as in erosion from one place to the other. So, why can’t both be treated as one and the same? Can there be appreciable erosion without rocks undergoing weathering?

Solution

  1. The mass movements and erosion can’t be treated as one and the same because,
    • Mass movements involve the bulk transfer of rock debris and soil down a slope primarily under the direct influence of gravity, without necessarily needing a dynamic transporting medium like water, wind, or ice.
    • Erosion, on the other hand, requires active geomorphic agents (such as running water, glaciers, wind, or waves) to acquire, transport, and remove weathered rock debris away from its source over significant distances. Therefore, while both shift materials, mass movements are driven directly by gravity as a bulk transfer, whereas erosion is carried out dynamically by moving agents.
  2. No, there cannot be appreciable erosion without weathering. Because weathering breaks down, weakens, and disintegrates solid, hard bedrock into smaller, loose fragments and regolith. If rocks did not undergo weathering first, they would remain solid and intact, making it extremely difficult for agents like wind, water, or ice to erode and transport them. Weathering prepares the material that erosion carries away.
