Solution

Given:

  • Sum of two numbers = 40
  • Difference of the two numbers = 16

Step-wise calculation:

1. Let the two numbers be (x) and (y).

2. According to the problem,

x + y = 40

x – y = 16

3. Adding the two equations:

(x + y) + (x – y) = 40 + 16

2x = 56

⇒ x = 28

4. Substitute (x = 28) into the first equation:

28 + y = 40

y = 40 – 28

y = 12

The two numbers are 28 and 12.
