The sum of the first n terms of an A.P is Sn = 6n − n2.
Putting n = 1,
S1 = 6 × 1 − 12
= 6 − 1
= 5
Putting n = 2,
S2 = 6 × 2 − 22
= 12 − 4
= 8
a1 = 5 = a
∴ S2 = 2a + d
8 = 2 × 5 + d
8 = 10 + d
d = 8 − 10
∴ d = −2
