The Sergeant supports the man by deliberately misleading his fellow policemen and preventing them from discovering the escaped prisoner.

In my view, this shows that the Sergeant’s sympathy, patriotism and humanity overcome his official duty. He understands the man’s cause and quietly helps him escape, even though he knows that doing so is against his responsibility as a police officer.
