The legs of a stool make an angle of 35° with the floor as shown in the following figure. Find the angles x and y.

Since, l m are parallel lines and PQ is transversal.
∴ x = ∠PQR ...[Alternate interior angles]
⇒ x = 35° ...[∵ ∠PQR]
Again, x + y = 180° ...[Linear pair]
⇒ 35° + y = 180°
⇒ y = 180° – 35° = 145°
