148, 162, 160, 154, 170, 162, x, 152
If the mean height is 158, find x.

Solution
Mean = `(sumx)/"N"`
= `(148 + 162 + 160 + 154 + 170 + 162 + x + 152)/(8)`
= `(1108 + x)/(8)`
∴ 158 = `(1108 + x)/(8)`
⇒ 1264 = 1108 + x
⇒ x = 156
∴ Mean height = 156cm.
