Question
The Atacama Desert is famous for stargazing, offering some of the clearest night skies, and its rocky, Mars-like landscape has even been used by NASA to test rovers. However, it has also become one of the world’s fastest-growing dumps for discarded clothes, caused by the rise of cheap fast fashion. The UN has called this waste problem ‘an environmental and social emergency’.

Solution
The Atacama Desert has a unique location and climate, making it an excellent place for stargazing and scientific research. However, the large amount of fast-fashion waste dumped there creates serious environmental and social problems. Discarded clothes can release harmful pollutants and microplastics, damaging the fragile desert ecosystem. This shows how excessive consumption can create environmental problems on a global scale. To address this issue, we should encourage sustainable fashion, reuse and recycling of clothes, reduction of textile waste, and support for ethical and eco-friendly brands.
