Solution

  1. A primary factor was the population explosion, which massively increased job development, resulting in huge unemployment. This caused a rural exodus to cities, resulting in congested, unclean urban slums.
  2. Simultaneously, the Industrial Revolution, particularly in England, flooded marketplaces with low-cost, machine-made products. This destroyed local artists and small-scale weavers, who were unable to compete with factory prices, resulting in widespread “pauperism”.
  3. This issue was increased by agricultural failure. Following terrible harvests, food costs exploded, leaving the masses unable to afford basic bread. Peasants in rural areas continued to bear the burden of high feudal dues and taxes. These combined pressures rendered the 1830s a tinderbox of discontent, directly fuelling social unrest and the subsequent wave of revolutions across Europe.
