  • When the stretched rubber band is plucked, it begins to move rapidly to and fro about its original position. This repeated to-and-fro motion is called vibration.
  • As the rubber band vibrates, it also makes the surrounding air vibrate. These vibrations travel through the air and reach our ears, so we hear a sound.
  • If the rubber band is stretched more tightly, the sound produced may also change. Thus, this activity shows that sound is produced by a vibrating object.
