Solution

To survey a part of my school using the plane table, I followed these steps:

  1. Selection of Area: I selected a small rectangular area of the school ground near the playground for the survey.
  2. Setting up the plane table: I positioned the plane table over the first station (Point A) and levelled it using the spirit level. I then centered it using the plumbing fork and plumb bob to ensure it was directly above the station.
  3. Orientation: I orientated the plane table using back sighting or by using the trough compass to align it with the north direction.
  4. Marking the base line: I chose a straight path in the area as the base line, e.g., from Point A to Point B, and marked it on the sheet using the scale.
  5. Drawing the rays: From each station, I sighted different objects or features in the area using the alidade and drew rays to locate their positions.
  6. Measuring distances: I measured the distances from the station to the features using the measuring tape or chain and plotted them to scale.
  7. Repeating the process: I shifted the plane table to the next station (Point B) and repeated the same steps for other features visible from that point.
  8. Final plotting: I joined the points on the map to represent the different features and boundaries in the surveyed area.
  9. Completion: I added a neat border, north direction, and scale to complete the map.
