Solution
A Journey Through Time: From Screens to Steam
As the time machine rattled backwards from the twenty-first century, familiar city lights vanished. I stepped into the nineteenth century and immediately noticed the slower pace of life. There were no smartphones, computers, or instant messages. People depended on letters, newspapers, horses, and, increasingly, the railway and telegraph.
Politics and administration looked very different. In Britain, Queen Victoria’s long reign shaped the age, while the British Empire governed India. The 1857 uprising and the establishment of direct Crown rule in 1858 had deeply affected India. Ordinary people had far less political power than citizens in many countries have today.
The streets were filled with buildings and monuments that seemed to tell stories of ambition and change. I would see the Eiffel Tower, completed in 1889, and the Statue of Liberty, dedicated in 1886. Their scale and design made me pause in wonder.
I was thrilled to imagine meeting writers such as Charles Dickens, Thomas Hardy, and Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Their books explored poverty, society, love, and change. In science, Michael Faraday’s work on electricity and Charles Darwin’s ideas about evolution were transforming knowledge. Leaders and reformers, including Abraham Lincoln and the young Mohandas Gandhi, were challenging injustice in different ways.
The century felt both exciting and unequal. I would miss modern comforts, but I would be amazed by the courage, discoveries, and creativity that helped shape our world.
