Question

Study the given electric circuit in which 2 A electric current is flowing between points X and Y.

  1. Using the battery, key, voltmeter and ammeter in this given electric circuit, redraw a circuit diagram in which 2 Ω and 4 Ω resistors are connected between X and Y in parallel combination.
  2. Circuit drawn by you, in which resistors are connected in parallel combination, calculate the electric current flowing through 4 Ω resistor.

Solution

In the original diagram, the resistors are in series, and the total current (I) is 2 A.

Total resistance (RS) = 2 + 4

= 6 Ω

Battery voltage (V) = I × R

= 2 × 6

= 12 V

When resistors are connected in parallel, the potential difference (voltage) remains the same across each branch.

Voltage across 4 Ω resistor: 12 V

Current (I): `V/R`

= `12/4`

= 3 A
