- Salvia achieves pollination by a lever mechanism. When an insect (usually a bee) enters the flower for nectar, it pushes the staminal lever, causing the anthers to swing down and dust pollen on the insect’s back. Later, when the insect visits another Salvia flower, the stigma touches the same pollen-laden part of the insect’s body, resulting in successful pollination.
