Solution
The carnivores control the numbers of herbivores and other carnivores. Herbivore populations would skyrocket in the absence of carnivores, quickly consuming vast quantities of plants and fungi until there was insufficient food to support them. The herbivores would eventually go hungry, leaving only the plants that they found repulsive or toxic. As a result, species diversity would drastically decline.
