  1. The core is the innermost and densest layer of the Earth.
  2. It has an average density of about 13 g/cm³.
  3. The core is mainly composed of two heavy metals: Iron (Fe) and Nickel (Ni), and hence also called the NIFE layer.
  4. Its diameter is approximately 3500 km.
  5. The temperature in the core is very high, about 5000°C on average, similar to the surface temperature of the Sun.
  6. The earth’s magnetic field originates from the core.
  7. The outer core and inner core boundary is marked by the lehmann discontinuity.
  8. The core is also referred to as the barysphere.
  9. The magnetic North and South poles arise due to the core but do not coincide exactly with the geographic poles and vary with time.
