Solution
Oparin and Haldane proposed that the primitive Earth had a reducing atmosphere with little or no free oxygen. Energy from ultraviolet radiation, volcanic heat, radioactive rocks and lightning drove reactions among simple substances, producing organic molecules. Rain carried these molecules into the early oceans, where they accumulated.
