Solution
Five conditions when the service is considered to be a fault service are as follows:
- A foot fault occurs when the server takes an illegal position while serving. The server’s feet must stay behind the baseline, within the area between the center line and sideline extensions. The feet should not touch the baseline or the extensions of the center line or sideline before the ball is hit.
- The ball must be released from one hand, although one-handed players can use their racket to release it.
- If the server swings but misses the ball, it’s considered a fault. However, if the server releases the ball but doesn’t attempt to hit it, there’s no fault, and they can try serving again.
- If the ball hits any object (other than the net cord, the opponent’s racket, or body) before bouncing, it’s a fault. For example, if the ball hits the net post and then lands in the correct service box, it is still a fault.
- If the ball fails to clear the net or bounces outside the correct service box, it is a fault.
