Solution

Given:

`16/x^2 - 6/x - 1 = 0, x\cancel=0`

Multiply the whole equation by x2 (since x ≠ 0):

16 − 6x − x2 = 0

x2 + 6x − 16 = 0

product = −16

sum = 6

These numbers are 8 and −2.

(x + 8) (x − 2) = 0

x + 8 = 0

⇒ x = −8

x − 2 = 0

⇒ x = 2

x = −8 or x = 2
