Solution
We have,
`2((1, 3),(0, x)) + ((y, 0),(1, 2)) = ((5, 6),(1, 8))`
Multiply the first matrix by 2,
`2((1, 3),(0, x)) = ((2, 6),(0, 2x))`
Add the two matrices,
`((2, 6),(0, 2x)) + ((y, 0),(1, 2)) = ((5, 6),(1, 8))`
= `((2 + y, 6),(1, 2x + 2)) = ((5, 6),(1, 8))`
On comparing, we get
2 + y = 5
y = 5 − 2
y = 3
2x + 2 = 8
2x = 8 − 2
2x = 6
x = `6/2`
x = 3
Therefore x = 3 and y = 3
