Since when has Panchayati Raj been in operation?

The modern Panchayati Raj system has been in operation since 2nd October 1959, when it was first inaugurated in Nagaur district, Rajasthan.

However, it received constitutional status through the 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act, 1992, which came into force on 24th April 1993. This act made Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) a part of the Constitution and provided them a legal and functional framework.
