Solution

In the synthesis of sodium oxide, two sodium atoms donate their two valence electrons to a single oxygen atom. By relinquishing 2 electrons, each sodium atom forms a sodium ion (2Na+). By acquiring two electrons, the oxygen atom generates an oxide ion (O2−).
