Question

Select the correct option from the given alternatives:

The equation of a line, having inclination 120° with positive direction of X−axis, which is at a distance of 3 units from the origin is

Options

  • `sqrt(3x) ± y + 6` = 0

  • `sqrt(3x) + y ± 6` = 0

  • x + y = 6

  • x + y = – 6

Solution

`sqrt(3x) + y ± 6` = 0

Explanation:

Here, α = 30° and p = 3 units

Equation of line with inclination α and distance from origin as p is

xcos α + ysin α = p

∴ xcos30° + ysin30° = ±3

∴ `sqrt(3x)/2 + y/2` = ± 3

∴  `sqrt(3)x + y ± 6` = 0
