Sage Jabali’s ashram was a supremely holy and serene penance grove (Tapovan). The atmosphere was so non-violent and friendly that natural enemies, like lions and elephants, forgot their innate hostility and lived together in harmony. The ashram echoed constantly with the chanting of Vedic mantras, and the air was filled with the fragrance of sacrificial fires (Havan). The trees were always laden with fruits and flowers, and the breeze was cool and pleasant. It was a sanctuary free from worldly troubles, embodying the very essence of peace.

When Harita (Jabali’s son) rescued the thirsty and orphaned parrot and brought it to the ashram, the other sages sitting there asked out of curiosity, “Where did you find this bird?” Harita replied that he found the bird lying in a half-dead state amidst lotus leaves on the banks of Pampa Lake. It was suffering from the scorching heat and thirst. Out of compassion, he gave it water and brought it to the ashram to save its life. He declared that they would care for it until it grew wings and became capable of flying on its own.

Harita placed the parrot under the shade near Sage Jabali. The great sage looked at the bird with his divine sight and remarked “It is reaping the fruits of its own misconduct from a past life.” Hearing this, all the sages were filled with amazement. They requested the sage to narrate the story of the parrot’s past life and its misconduct. Sage Jabali replied that he would tell the story in detail after completing the evening rituals and prayers.

महर्षि जाबालि का आश्रम एक अत्यंत पवित्र और शांत तपोवन था। वहां का वातावरण इतना अहिंसक और मैत्रीपूर्ण था कि शेर और हाथी जैसे स्वाभाविक शत्रु भी अपना वैर भाव भूलकर एक साथ रहते थे। आश्रम में निरंतर वेदों के मंत्रोच्चारण की ध्वनि गूंजती रहती थी और हवन की सुगंध फैली रहती थी। वहां के वृक्ष सदैव फलों और फूलों से लदे रहते थे और पवन अत्यंत शीतल और सुखद थी। यह स्थान सांसारिक क्लेशों से मुक्त और शांति का साक्षात स्वरूप था।

जब जाबालि के पुत्र हारीत उस प्यासे और अनाथ शुक (तोते) को बचाकर आश्रम में लाए, तो वहां बैठे अन्य मुनियों ने कौतूहलवश उनसे पूछा, “यह पक्षी आपको कहां मिला?” इस पर हारीत ने उत्तर दिया कि यह पक्षी पम्पा सरोवर के किनारे कमल के पत्तों के बीच अधमरी अवस्था में पड़ा था। धूप और प्यास से इसकी हालत खराब थी। दयावश मैंने इसे जल पिलाया और इसके प्राणों की रक्षा के लिए इसे यहां ले आया। जब तक इसके पंख नहीं निकल आते और यह उड़ने योग्य नहीं हो जाता, तब तक हम ही इसका पालन-पोषण करेंगे।

हारीत ने उस तोते को महर्षि जाबालि की छाया में रख दिया। महर्षि जाबालि ने अपनी दिव्य दृष्टि से उस तोते की ओर देखा और कहा “यह अपने ही किसी पूर्व जन्म के अविनय (पाप/दुराचरण) का फल भोग रहा है।” यह सुनकर सभी ऋषियों को बड़ा आश्चर्य हुआ। उन्होंने महर्षि से प्रार्थना की कि वे इस तोते के पूर्व जन्म और इसके अविनय की कहानी सुनाएं। महर्षि ने कहा कि संध्या-वंदन आदि नित्य कार्यों के पश्चात वे यह कथा विस्तार से सुनाएंगे।
