Ramapithecus, Australopithecus and Homo habilis. Man's oldest direct predecessors are thought to have been Ramapithecus. The African ape man, Australopithecus, was a member of a type that was a direct descendant of humans. Homo habilis is a prehistoric species of man that originated with Australopithecus. Due to declining flora, the herbivorous great apes transitioned from arboreal to terrestrial life during evolution, becoming omnivorous. Human ancestors were compelled to acquire an upright bipedal walk in order to hunt and defend themselves on open grasslands, which needed quick movements. Adopting a bipedal walk was undoubtedly beneficial because the hands (forelimbs) could be employed for defense, hunting, and fruit gathering, among other things.
