Solution

  1. Take a thick circular piece of white cardboard and draw a circle on it.
  2. Divide the circle into seven equal sectors.
  3. Colour the seven sectors in the colours of the rainbow in order: violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red.
  4. Make a small hole at the centre of the disc and fix the disc firmly on a pencil, stick or spindle so that it can rotate freely.
  5. Rotate the disc rapidly.
  6. When the Newton’s disc rotates very fast, the seven different colours appear to mix together, and the disc looks white or nearly white.

Observation: The seven colours are not seen separately when the disc is rotated rapidly. They appear to combine and form a white colour.
