  1. Respiration occurs all the time, both day and night, in all living plant cells. Just like animals, plants need a constant, uninterrupted supply of energy to carry out vital metabolic activities and stay alive. Therefore, they break down food to release energy 24 hours a day.
  2. Photosynthesis occurs only during the daytime because it relies completely on sunlight (light energy) as its primary power source. In this process, chlorophyll traps solar energy to convert carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O) into glucose. Once the sun sets, the process stops.
