Solution

  1. Antony believes that Brutus and Cassius are attacking first because they want to appear bold and confident. He understands that this show of courage is meant to hide their fear and weakness.
  2. A messenger brings news that the enemy is advancing. Antony suggests that Octavius should lead his forces on the left wing. Octavius disagrees and says that he will take the right wing. He also firmly tells Antony that he will do what he thinks is best, showing that he will not simply obey Antony.
  3. Brutus’ strategy was to march towards Philippi and meet the enemy there. He argued that the people between Sardis and Philippi might otherwise join Antony and Octavius. By advancing quickly, he hoped to prevent the enemy from gaining more support.
  4. Antony taunts Brutus by reminding him of Caesar’s murder and accusing the conspirators of acting dishonourably. He says they surrounded Caesar and stabbed him while pretending to be his friends. He compares them to apes and hounds who fawn before attacking.
  5. Octavius appears more practical and capable because he remains calm and firm while Antony exchanges insults with the conspirators. He focuses more on the battle and shows independent judgement, refusing to be controlled by Antony.
