Because of its proximity to the Equator and the influence of moisture-laden South-East and North-East Trade Winds from the Atlantic Ocean, the Amazon River basin experiences tremendous, continuous downpours throughout the year. The extreme sun heat creates a high rate of evaporation, resulting in daily convectional rainfall. The region receives a high average annual rainfall of 2000 to 3000 mm, which directly supports the world’s largest and most ecologically varied tropical rainforest ecosystem.
