Solution
The Drought Quadrilateral (Polígono das Secas) is a semi-arid zone in northeastern Brazil that experiences persistent drought and severe water constraints. This harsh environment is mostly due to the rain shadow effect formed by the Brazilian Highlands and the Great Escarpment. These coastal mountains serve as a geographic barrier, causing moisture-laden trade winds from the Atlantic Ocean to climb and deposit rain on the windward slopes. As a result, the air gets dry by the time it reaches the interior leeward side, leaving the region with highly unpredictable and scant rainfall, ranging from 15 to 30 inches per year. This dry region supports a distinct, drought-resistant shrub vegetation known as Caatinga, but it also causes significant financial challenges, such as frequent crop failures, catastrophic animal losses, and continuous water shortages for the local population.
